Ten local primary schools joined us for an afternoon of athletics yesterday. Our annual ‘Sports for All’ Festival aims to give local primary schools the opportunity to take part in competitive athletics and also to give our Year 10 PE students, who helped to run the event, valuable experience in mentoring and coaching younger children.
The schools entered teams of eight children, four boys and four girls, who took part in a variety of activities including long jump, ball throwing, triple jump, skipping and hoops and balls. After the field events, the teams took part in a series of athletics track events, including 4×100 relays. Medals were awarded for individual winners and all children received a certificate at the end of the afternoon. Well done in particular to Beechwood Primary School, who won both the girls and boys relays and took home 13 medals between them!
The children and their parents finished the day with a delicious tea, with cakes baked by the school’s catering team.
Mrs Hobson, Head of PE said: The atmosphere was fantastic and the children really got into the spirit of the competition, enthusiastically cheering on their team mates. I think everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event and we hope that they will join us again next year.”
Mr Alan Edwards, Sports Coach at Highwood Primary School, commented:
“The whole afternoon was calm, structured, fun, competitive and luckily, sunny! I was particularly impressed with the young leaders [Year 10 PE students] As someone who is constantly organising events and utilising youngsters where we can, I felt their communication, demonstrations and management of the activities was excellent.”
