We held our first ever Sports Awards Dinner on Tuesday 2 July 2018, at Sand Martin’s Golf Club.
80 pupils from across all year groups were invited to attend the evening, selected by Director of Sport, Kirstie Hobson and Head of Boys’ PE, Matt Humphries for their dedication and commitment to the sporting life of the school throughout the academic year.
The pupils arrived dressed in smart evening wear; the girls in glamorous outfits and the boys in their suits, some with waistcoats and bow ties.
A sports quiz kept everyone entertained before the evening was officially opened by Head, Jane Tudor.
Prizes included Commitment Awards for girls and boys from each year group and Sportsman/woman of the Year for each year, the latter voted for by the pupils themselves.
But the most sought after trophies were the Junior and Senior Sports Personality Awards, won by Year 9 pupil Henar Garcia-Canoyra (Junior Girls), Year 9 pupil Ellis Westby (Junior Boys) and Year 11 pupil Megan Rowland (Senior).
Special awards were also presented to two pupils for stand-out performances in sports undertaken outside of school: Year 7 pupil Kofi Elhaggagi, an elite trampolinist, who is currently competing in the English Championship Finals, and Year 9 pupil Hannah Roberts, who won the 300m for London West in the ISA Sport UK National Athletics Competition in June, with a superb run of 41.95 seconds.
With the date clashing with England’s World Cup match against Columbia, the game was shown on a big screen during the dinner and one of the tensest moments of the evening was the penalty from which England scored to go 1-0 up. The whole room erupted with excitement and emotion. This was a perfect moment for a perfect evening. However, the equaliser came just as the evening was ending and parents had arrived to collect their children. The staff were quite relieved that the nail-biting scenes that followed could be experienced without the company of the 80 pupils!
Mrs Hobson summed up the evening: “ Luckley’s first ever Sports Awards Dinner was a fantastic evening of celebration and reflection, on not only this year’s successes but the amazing commitment and effort put in by all those who have contributed to sport at Luckley this year.”
