Nicky Weeks Taking A Swing At Life

Alumna Nicky Weeks, class of 1986, was a sports captain whilst at Luckley, going on to become a qualified accountant and then, a jockey – speaking volumes of her range of abilities. She also played hockey after leaving Luckley and later, golf. Nicky has always enjoyed an active and healthy lifestyle.

LOVE AND SUPPORT

In 2006, after three years of debilitating symptoms, Nicky was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which lead to significant life adjustments. It would be six months after diagnosis before Nicky could venture past the garden gate. With the support of a loving family and Nicky’s love of sport and fitness, her recovery was made quicker and easier than expected. To many, Nicky’s disability is invisible as she seems similar to her younger self. Yet her challenges with fatigue, cognitive load, medication and stress are very real and require forward planning and understanding. Nicky has been known to invent new words, when the old ones fail, much to the amusement of those around her.

A TIME OF RECOVERY

It was at the time of recovery that Nicky took up golf again – now firmly part of her fitness regime. Nicky plays as a regular member of Puttenham Golf Club as well as with EDGA, a non-profit organisation promoting and delivering golfing opportunities for the disabled. Her first competition with EDGA was in 2019, and in September this year, Nicky was one of eight to compete in the RSM European Play Offs at North Hampshire Golf Club. Not only is Nicky actively improving her par but she promotes the game well. “It ticks all the boxes”, she says, “providing fresh air, friendship and over time, the ability to move with confidence.”

KEEPING PACE

Nicky keeps the pace up by running regularly. She participated in the London Marathon in 2017 – raising money for the MS Society. She also completed a number of triathlons, including winning a paratriathlon at Dorney Lake in 2018. And in 2019 Nicky and her daughter ran the Paris Marathon. Nicky takes on life’s twists, turns and challenges with an open mind and a willingness to take the best swing at it she can. Well done to Nicky for her continued effort and achievements. We are rooting for you!
