A Look Back at Our GCSE Options Breakfast
On Tuesday 21 January, we were delighted to host a GCSE Options Breakfast in Drake Hall for all our Year 9 pupils. This important event marked the start of an exciting journey as pupils began exploring the GCSE courses we offer at Luckley House School.
What Happened on the Day
During the session, representatives from all GCSE option subjects were available at information stands to answer questions and provide guidance. This was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to gain insight into the courses available and to start considering which options might best suit their interests and aspirations.
To make the morning even more enjoyable, a selection of pastries and juice was served.
For Parents
This event was designed primarily for pupils, and parental attendance was not necessary. However, those parents who chose to attend found the session both informative and engaging.
To further assist with the decision-making process, a video explaining the options process was sent home that evening. Parents’ Evening followed the next day, on Wednesday 22 January, providing an opportunity to discuss pupils’ suitability for their chosen subjects with individual subject teachers. Appointments were extended to allow for deeper discussions, and we thank parents for booking appointments only with those subjects under consideration.
The GCSE Curriculum at Luckley House School
At Luckley, our Key Stage 4 curriculum is designed to provide a solid core of essential subjects while offering a range of choices that enable pupils to develop their individual abilities, interests, and skills.
All pupils follow GCSE courses in the core subjects:
- English Language
- English Literature
- Mathematics
- Science (with the flexibility for pupils to achieve either two or three GCSE grades, depending on their aptitude)
- A Modern Foreign Language
In addition, pupils typically select four additional GCSE courses from a diverse range of options, including:
- Art
- Art Textiles
- Business
- Chinese (Mandarin)
- Computer Science
- Dance
- Drama
- Design & Technology
- Food Preparation & Nutrition
- Geography
- History
- Music
- Photography
- Physical Education
- Religious Studies
Since the humanities (History, Religious Studies, and Geography) are recognised as facilitating subjects, we encourage all pupils to consider taking at least one of these.
Important Note
Please be aware that the school may withdraw a subject if pupil numbers are too low to make a course educationally effective. We will inform pupils and parents promptly should this situation arise.
We were thrilled to see our Year 9 pupils engaging so actively in this informative and inspiring event. This was a wonderful start to their Key Stage 4 journey, and we look forward to supporting them as they make their final subject choices.
